‘Man United identify striker who they plan to partner with Viktor Gyokeres’

Manchester United are seemingly already putting plans in place should they win the race to sign Sporting CP striker Viktor Gyokeres this summer.

Man United have been heavily linked with Gyokeres since his former Sporting coach Ruben Amorim took charge of the Red Devils back in November.

Amorim wants to reunite with the Swedish international to bolster his attacking options after United scored just 44 goals in 38 Premier League games last season and came a dismal 15th in the final standings.

Gyokeres has an £85million release clause in his contract and is a key target for Amorim this summer.

United willing to sell Hojlund ahead of Gyokeres swoop

If Amorim does get his man it looks as though the United boss has identified who he wants to partner the 27-year-old in attack.

It has emerged from the Sun (16 June) that Rasmus Hojlund, who moved to Old Trafford for £72m in 2023, will likely to be sold, with fellow striker Joshua Zirkzee to remain at the club.

Zirkzee endured a tough opening season with United, but is being backed to repay the £36.5m the club paid Bologna last summer.

Hojlund has failed to make an impact at the club and Inter Milan are one of the potential destinations for the Denmark international this summer.

United value the 22-year-old at between £34-£38m and want a permanent transfer, but Inter prefer a loan deal with a purchase clause attached.

Gyokeres purchase would be a boost for Amorim

Football Insider Verdict

With no European football for United next season, after their defeat to league rivals Tottenham in the Europa League final, and after a poor Premier League campaign, Amorim is desperate to make Gyokeres his first signing of the summer transfer window.

Amorim won just seven of his 27 Premier League games last season and the pressure will be on the Portuguese manager to get United back to winning ways immediately.

The introduction of Gyokeres would be a welcome signing for Amorim considering the pair worked together at Sporting and won the Liga Portugal together in the 2023/24 season.

Gyokeres’ record in Portugal is extraordinary with 97 goals and 26 assists in 102 appearances for the club.

The Swede could instantly improve United’s goalscoring issues, especially since the news that Bruno Fernandes looks set to stay put at Old Trafford after he rejected an offer from Al Hilal in Saudi Arabia.
