Man United in race to sign Trevoh Chalobah – sources

Man United have joined multiple Premier League clubs in the race to sign Chelsea defender Trevoh Chalobah in the summer transfer window.

Speaking on the latest edition of Football Insider’s Inside Track podcast, senior correspondent Pete O’Rourke revealed that Chalobah will leave Chelsea before the transfer window closes, with clubs racing to agree a deal.

The 25-year-old has previously turned down approaches from both Crystal Palace and Fulham in favour of staying at Stamford Bridge and was in no rush to leave.

However, the Blues are now looking to force him out after he was left out of the travelling squad for their pre-season tour of the USA.

Chalobah came through the academy at Chelsea having joined at eight years old, and has since gone on to make 80 senior appearances for the club.

Last season, he made just 17 appearances after suffering a thigh injury which saw him ruled out between August and January, before further complications extended his absence to February.

However, clubs across the Premier League are willing to take a gamble on his fitness after the role he played in the latter stages of the season under Mauricio Pochettino.

His versatility and ability to play at either centre-back or right-back is seen as a valuable asset by the recruitment team at Old Trafford.

The interest from Man United comes as they look to reinforce their defence after losing Raphael Varane and Willy Kambwala.

Despite the signing of Leny Yoro earlier this month, they remain keen on signing a new defensive option, as they keep tabs on Chalobah’s situation.

Football Insider first revealed in May that the Blues would look to sell Chalobah this summer, but the way the club have gone about the situation has led to criticism.

In other news, Newcastle are closing in on a deal to sign Noni Madueke.
