Man United’s incredibly bold Senne Lammens plan is destined for failure

Manchester United signed goalkeeper Senne Lammens as part of their plan to win the Premier League title in 2028.

However, Man United finished just 15th in the top flight last season, and appear light years away from such a lofty goal.

The Red Devils had a busy summer transfer window, with Ruben Amorim signing attackers like Bryan Mbeumo and Matheus Cunha.

Those acquisitions led to optimism at Old Trafford, but Man United were knocked out of the Carabao Cup by Grimsby Town, handing Amorim a concerning reality check.

Man United plan to win the Premier League title with Senne Lammens in 2028 is unrealistic

Amorim’s busy transfer window ran right until transfer deadline day on Monday, 1 September, when Man United signed goalkeeper Senne Lammens from Royal Antwerp.

The North West side’s decision to buy the 23-year-old meant that they opted against a deal for Aston Villa’s Emi Martinez.

According to BBC Sport on Tuesday, 2 September, Amorim’s men signed Lammens because of their plan to win the Premier League title by 2028, which marks their 150th anniversary as a club.

The Red Devils acknowledged the fact that by their 150th anniversary year, Lammens will be 26, whereas Martinez will be 35.

However, Man United are not well placed to become Premier League champions by 2028, after failing to land a top-half spot just last season.

Having steered the Old Trafford outfit to a loss against Arsenal in their opening top-flight game and an early Carabao Cup exit, Amorim is already under pressure.

That uncertainty makes it unlikely that Man United can become Premier League champions in less than three years’ time.

Ruben Amorim should have signed Emi Martinez over Senne Lammens

While Man United are right to outline that Lammens boasts more potential than Martinez, Amorim needed a quick fix between the sticks this season.

Manchester United Premier League results 2025/26
Arsenal (H)0-1 L
Fulham (A)1-1 D
Burnley (H)3-2 W
Man United have started the new season poorly

Altay Bayindir’s error caused Amorim’s side to lose 1-0 to Arsenal in their first Premier League game of the season, while Andre Onana performed poorly against Grimsby.

Meanwhile, Lammens does not have any experience in the Premier League and must now bridge the gap between the top tier in Belgium and the English top flight.

Contrastingly, Villa star Martinez has proven himself as one of the best goalkeepers in England in recent seasons and won the 2022 World Cup with Argentina.

Therefore, with the current campaign in mind, Amorim would have been better served by signing the 32-year-old instead of Lammens.

Despite being a young man with no Premier League experience, Lammens is under pressure to instantly deliver for Man United, thanks to Onana and Bayindir’s poor performances.
