Man United insider shares ‘shock’ update on Marcus Rashford to Barcelona
Barcelona will find it difficult to complete a move to sign Man United star Marcus Rashford this month, according to their former chief scout.
Mick Brown, who spent over a decade at Old Trafford during their most successful period and remains very well-connected there, exclusively told Football Insider that the Spanish giants’ financial situation has called the move into question.
This comes days after Brown told Football Insider that the 27-year-old’s preference would be to move to Spain before the 3 February deadline.
However, it is thought they will have to sell fringe players in an attempt to slash their wage bill as they are currently close to La Liga’s strict wage-cap rules.
Earlier this month, they were forced to leave £50million signing Dani Olmo out of their squad as his inclusion would have seen them breach the rules – and a court appeal is ongoing.
Rashford is currently on a £350,000-per-week deal at Man United and is thought to be demanding a similar wage at any new club – forcing Borussia Dortmund out of contention.
As a result, Barcelona will have to axe players from their lofty bill if they want to complete the signing, but have not been put off in their pursuit.
Barcelona struggling to pull off Marcus Rashford deal with Man United
Rashford looks set to leave Man United this month after a public fall-out with Ruben Amorim, but any deal is now expected to drag on until the transfer deadline.
Brown, who has a wealth of experience in top-level player recruitment and also spent time as the chief scout with the likes of Blackburn and Sunderland, insisted that Barcelona’s financial issues have not come as a shock, and they will look for a way around them.
“I don’t think Barcelona are in the best position financially to cover his wages,” he told Football Insider.
“They’re up against it a bit in terms of their wage structure with the cap they’ve got in Spain.
“That might end up being a problem for them.
“But it won’t have come as a shock, they know the situation they’re in and they’re probably going to look for ways around it if they can.
“That might mean letting some of their fringe players leave because that would free up some funds and space in the squad.

“But it looks at the moment like those issues are going to get in the way.
“It doesn’t matter whether they want to sign him or not if they can’t get it done financially.”
