Here’s what Unai Emery’s said about signing Jadon Sancho as Man United make transfer decision

Man United will allow Jadon Sancho to leave Old Trafford on a free transfer at the expiration of his contract this summer.

The winger signed a five-year deal with the option of a further 12 months when he arrived from Borussia Dortmund in a £73million deal in 2021.

According to The Sun, Man United are ready to pass up on that option and allow the England international to leave for free.

Sancho has spent the season on loan at Aston Villa, scoring one goal and providing one assist in 25 games across all competitions.

After initially struggling to garner the trust of Unai Emery, the winger has been heavily involved in the Premier League of late.

Jadon Sancho to call time on Man United disaster

It was Sancho’s stunning performances in the Bundesliga that convinced Man United to part ways with such a large sum of money.

The forward, 21 at the time of his move, was coming off the back of a season that had seen him score eight goals and provide 11 assists in just 26 league games.

The campaign before that was even more special – Sancho scored 17 goals and provided 16 assists in 32 Bundesliga games.

His time at Man United, however, has been disastrous. Sancho went through patches of good form in his first season, but there was patience given the winger’s age.

In 2023, after a second lacklustre season, the winger was suspended from team training by Erik ten Hag after claiming to have been made a scapegoat.

He would spend the season on loan back with Dortmund, and his only appearance for Man United since came briefly from the bench in the 2024 Community Shield.

Successive loans to Chelsea and Villa have followed, with Sancho now set for pastures new away from Old Trafford.

What has Unai Emery said about signing Sancho?

Both Sancho and Harvey Elliott arrived on loan at Villa on transfer deadline day in the summer.

But while the latter has been an outcast for much of the season, the former has attracted the favour of Emery in recent months.

Sancho has started eight of Villa’s last 11 games across all competitions, and has picked up his first goal contributions for the club.

It is not clear whether there is any interest in signing the 25-year-old permanently in the summer, but Emery was asked if he has thought about the prospect.

“Not yet, but he is a fantastic player,” he said. “Hopefully he can help us by increasing his qualities in our structure like he is doing.

“He will need another contract, and maybe it could be here. If he plays his best football, we will want him.”
