Man United make up their minds on letting Raphael Varane go after new talks – sources
Man United are set to allow Raphael Varane to leave on a free transfer this summer after new talks behind the scenes, sources have told Football Insider.
The defender’s impending exit will free up his huge wage in June, with no U-turn on the decision since the arrival of Sir Jim Ratcliffe and his INEOS organisation.
The 30-year-old arrived at Old Trafford from Real Madrid in August 2021, having lifted three league titles and four Champions League trophies with the Spanish giants.
Sources told Football Insider in February that the Red Devils chose not to trigger a one-year extension in the player’s deal.
Man United to allow star man to exit this summer
Varane has been heavily impacted by injuries during his time in England, with the centre-back limited to 30 appearances in all competitions this season.
He is approaching his 100th appearance for the club, but whether he reaches that target remains to be seen, with the season rapidly coming to an end.
Central defence has been a real problem area for Man United manager Erik ten Hag this season, with the likes of Victor Lindelof and Lisandro Martinez also spending plenty of time on the sidelines.
It has forced the manager to turn to the likes of Harry Maguire and Jonny Evans, as well as youngster Willy Kambwala.
Serial winner Varane, who has also lifted the World Cup with France, could now leave that group in the summer, allowing Man United to free up space in their wage bill.

The centre-back can currently talk to foreign sides about a pre-contract agreement ahead of a free transfer switch later this year.
