‘Man United may sign new keeper after Andre Onana’s reps hold Old Trafford talks’

Manchester United could still enter the market for a new goalkeeper following talks with Andre Onana’s representatives about his future at Old Trafford.

United’s 2024/25 season could not have gone much worse, with Ruben Amorim unable to help them improve any following his appointment as manager last November.

The Red Devils ended the campaign in 16th position in the Premier League, for their worst league finish since 1974, and Cameroonian international goalkeeper Onana again struggled to consistently impress in-between the sticks at Old Trafford.

Onana joined the club for £43.8million [Sky Sports] from Inter Milan back in 2023, but numerous high-profile mistakes over the last two years have seen his stock fall under both Erik ten Hag and Amorim.

Former Red Devils chief scout Mick Brown told Football Insider in April that United were preparing to accept offers for Onana this summer amid interest from the Saudi Pro League, and a new update on his future and their plan to sign a new keeper has now emerged with the transfer window back open.

Andre Onana set to stay after Man United talks

Onana kept just nine clean sheets in 34 league appearances last term, and he was blamed by United fans for their Europa League final loss to Tottenham after allowing Brennan Johnson’s winner to slowly bounce into the net in their defeat in Bilbao.

Aston Villa’s Emi Martinez has emerged as a replacement for Onana in recent months, but The Athletic have now provided a key update on his future, reporting that he is “expected to stay” at Old Trafford this summer after his representatives held a meeting with club chiefs last week.

They also claim that United could still enter the market for a new stopper this summer, though, with Amorim potentially looking to sign a backup who can provide competition to the 29-year-old ahead of Altay Bayindir.

United’s plans could mean an exit for Altay Bayindir this summer

Football Insider verdict

Onana has not particularly impressed as the Red Devils’ first-choice keeper over the last two seasons, but his lack of strong competition has meant that both of the managers he has played under for United have had to hand him consistent chances to prove himself.

Turkish international Bayindir has been his back-up since his own arrival in 2023, but has never been able to grasp the opportunities handed to him to become number one, with just three clean sheets and 18 goals conceded in 10 appearances last term.

The 27-year-old conceded four goals against Newcastle and Brentford respectively after Onana was dropped by Amorim towards the end of the campaign, and The i claimed in April that he looks “likely to leave” Old Trafford this summer to play more first-team football.

This latest update means that his future surely lies away from the Red Devils, but it remains to be seen if he will definitely depart with United yet to make a final decision on whether they will sign a new back-up to Onana.
