Man United must spend ‘£1bn’ to fix ‘abysmal’ mess – Keith Wyness
Everton’s former chief Keith Wyness has claimed Man United may need to spend “£1billion” to fix the “abysmal” state of their facilities.
Speaking on the new edition of Football Insider’s Inside Track podcast, the 66-year-old – who served as CEO at Goodison Park between 2004 and 2009 and now runs a football consultancy advising elite clubs – claimed Old Trafford’s condition is a “big issue” – and something which should be held against the Glazer Family.
Man United announced last week (14 June) that they will spend £50million on refurbishing their Carrington training ground – promising a “world-class football facility with a positive culture to support future success”.
In March, the Red Devils set up an expert task force to plan to regenerate Old Trafford and build one of the best stadiums in the world.
The state of the famous ground has drawn criticism from fans and pundits and a serious leak in the roof hit the headlines after a loss against Arsenal in May.
‘Abysmal’ Man United facilities could cost £1bn to fix, says Wyness
Wyness claimed the Carrington project is just “one box in about 20” Man United need to tick – meaning it could cost upwards of £1billion for Sir Jim Ratcliffe to fix the club.
He told Football Insider‘s Insider Track podcast: “The Carrington news is just one of many boxes that Ratcliffe has to tick.
“Old Trafford is a big issue. There won’t be news on where they’re going until Seb Coe and his committee have finished their deliberations.
“It has to be fixed if they’re going to stay there – it’s going to require some serious surgery.
“The Glazers have let it go abysmally, and that’s something which should always be held against them.

“As far as I can see, Carrington is just one box in about 20 to try and fix Man United and their facilities.
“If every tick costs £50million, then it’s going to be a lot of work and money.”
