Man United news: Board ‘already lining up’ new signings after Romano’s transfer reveal – pundit

Kevin Phillips has claimed Manchester United are preparing for a “rebuild” under a new manager this summer after failing to sign anyone in January.

The former Sunderland striker, speaking exclusively to Football Insider, suggested the Red Devils’ priority will be finding a new head coach to succeed Ralf Rangnick.

Fabrizio Romano, speaking on his Youtube channel (2 February), claims the Old Trafford board chose not to make any signings because they are planning to appoint a new manager in the summer.

The Italian journalist claims Erik Ten Hag and Mauricio Pochettino are among the “many names” on their shortlist.

Phillips admitted he always thought Rangnick was a temporary appointment.

He suggested the Manchester United top brass will be preparing for a busy summer.

Phillips told Football Insider’s Dylan Childs: “I didn’t think he would be the permanent one anyway. I thought he would be there until the summer.

“In the meantime, I think the club will be identifying their new guy as the season’s going on.

“Maybe even possibly making contact with someone and lining them up for the summer. They may also be lining players up already.

“It makes sense not to bring three, four players in during this window if the manager’s not going to be there in the summer. A sensible decision from Man United.

“They have got a good enough squad to get results. It’s all about the summer and probably a new manager in. The rebuild starts there.”

Rangnick was appointed interim manager at Old Trafford back in November 2021.

He is set to take on a consultancy role at the end of the season.
