Man United news: Expert issues Marcus Rashford exit claim as fresh quotes emerge

Noel Whelan has insisted Gareth Southgate’s comments will have no bearing on Marcus Rashford’s decision on his Man United future.

The former Leeds striker, speaking exclusively to Football Insider, insisted the 24-year-old has “a lot of questions” to answer under Erik ten Hag after his poor form in the 2021-22 campaign.

As quoted by the Manchester Evening News (13 June), England boss Southgate warned Man United trio Luke Shaw, Jadon Sancho, and Rashford that they have a “lot to do” in order to get back into contention ahead of the World Cup later this year.

All three were omitted from the latest Three Lions squad for this month’s internationals.

Rashford has been linked with a potential Tottenham move after a 2021-22 campaign which saw him net just four league goals.

Whelan suggested a transfer could be on the cards if the forward cannot impress Ten Hag.

When asked if Southgate’s comments could influence a potential exit, he told Football Insider‘s Ewan Kingsbury: “Not really.

“I’m sure Ten Hag will be ready to give everyone the opportunity to shine in pre-season – and that includes Marcus Rashford.

“It didn’t work under Rangnick, but that doesn’t mean to say his Man United career is over. He’ll be given the same opportunities as everyone else and will be assessed accordingly.

“If he does need to move on after that, I’m sure they’ll find the best place for him.

“Sometimes a change can do you good. Especially when it gets a bit stale and a bit too familiar.

“Hopefully he can kick on again with a fresh challenge under this new manager.

There are a lot of questions he needs to answer after his form last season.”
