Man United news: Expert 'sure' on Donny van de Beek role as 'marquee' signing incoming
Noel Whelan has insisted Man United flop Donny van de Beek will have an increased role under former manager Erik ten Hag in the 2022-23 season.
The former Leeds striker, speaking exclusively to Football Insider, claimed the Red Devils will struggle to replace Paul Pogba with a “marquee” addition after failing to qualify for the Champions League.
Van de Beek, 25, made just four starts for Man United in the 2021-22 campaign before spending the second half of the season on loan at Everton.
The Netherlands international has made just 19 total starts for the Old Trafford club since completing a reported £35.7million switch from Ajax in 2020.
Van de Beek made 110 appearances for the Dutch giants across three seasons under Ten Hag – scoring 32 goals and registering 29 assists.
Whelan suggested the midfield star is in line for an increased role after being reunited with his former boss.

“They’ve got Van de Beek, let’s not forget,” he told Football Insider‘s Russell Edge.
“He went out on loan – but he’s already worked under Ten Hag a lot. I can see him playing a lot more this season, that’s for sure.
“They lost Pogba, who was probably the biggest name in that midfield area.
“You’d like to think they will go out and get that marquee player in midfield.
“But where are they going to get that player from when they’re playing in the Europa League?
“This is where getting that top-four status, just as Tottenham did, is so important for attracting the calibre of players you want.”
