Man United news: Pundit excited by Scott McTominay development – ‘Incredible’

Man United star Scott McTominay “absolutely” deserves a contract extension at Old Trafford.

Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, former West Ham and Scotland striker Frank McAvennie claimed McTominay, 27, looks like the “mainstay” of Erik ten Hag’s side in a more advanced position.

The Scotland international has reportedly been offered a new long-term contract by the Red Devils amid his impressive season and just months after the club were open to selling him to the Hammers.

Across 34 appearances in all competitions, he has bagged nine goals and three assists – including two match-winning braces against Chelsea and Brentford in the Premier League.

McAvennie admitted that McTominay plays better for his nation than his club, but was adamant his United performances this season warrant a new deal.

“I’ve always thought that McTominay is a better player for Scotland than he is for his club,” he told Football Insider.

“It’s only because Scotland plays with him more forward – that shows you how good Steve Clarke is.

“But he is still getting involved for Man United by getting goals and he looks like the mainstay of the football team sometimes.

“His ability was never in doubt, it’s incredible.

“Some say he’s not a Man United-like player and maybe the jersey was too heavy for him.

“But it might just be that he’s in a better position and he has the freedom to go forward.

“He’s done well for me at United and if anyone deserves a new contract, it’s absolutely him.”
