Man United news: Pundit laments 'money down the toilet' as £64.4m Frenkie de Jong deal nears

Noel Whelan has urged Man United to complete even more signings as they near the £64.4million signing of Frenkie de Jong.

The former Leeds striker, speaking exclusively to Football Insider, insisted the Red Devils have to “catch up” in the transfer market after “flushing money down the toilet” in recent years.

Football Insider revealed on Monday (27 June) that Man United are in advanced talks to sign Frenkie de Jong for £64.4million and an agreement is expected in the next 48 hours.

New boss Erik ten Hag is yet to make any summer additions – despite releasing six stars at the end of the 2021/22 campaign.

Chief among the released players was £93.2million record signing Paul Pogba.

Whelan suggested De Jong is simply a like-for-like replacement for Pogba.

He backed Ten Hag to orchestrate a clear-out of failed signings to raise transfer funds.

“It is a huge coup, but it’s only one player,” he told Football Insider‘s Ewan Kingsbury.

“Ten Hag has got a lot of work to do with the rest of the squad.

“De Jong coming in is just one player. One player who will probably replace Pogba after he left – and he’ll go straight into the side.

“I think the fans want to see more players coming in, not just one signing for £64million.

“That might mean players going out to recoup some money. They’ve absolutely wasted money in the past years.

“You look at £93.2million for Pogba, come on. What did he offer? What did he give? It’s a waste.

“The amount of money they’ve flushed down the toilet is remarkable. They’ve got to catch up now.

“To be more active they’ve got to sell the players who haven’t done it in order to raise some funds.”
