Man United next manager: Insider reveals what he’s ‘hearing’ from sources on ‘immediate’ Michael Carrick appointment

Man United are not planning to decide their next manager until the end of the season despite calls for Michael Carrick to be given the role immediately.

Carrick’s side beat Tottenham 2-0 last time out, making it four wins from four under his interim guidance and leading many to call for him to be given the job.

Some have gone as far as to suggest he could be given the permanent job before the end of the season rather than waiting until the summer to decide.

However, former Man United chief scout Mick Brown told Football Insider that INEOS are not rushing into a decision and are continuing to assess their options.

Carrick has placed himself in a strong position and is now seen as the front-runner for the role, but other high-profile options are still being considered.

Man United make new Michael Carrick plan

Brown told Football Insider on 26 January that Man United will not rush into hiring Carrick and plan to assess their options at the end of the season regardless of his form.

That stance has now been reiterated despite growing calls for the 44-year-old to be rewarded with the job in the near future as a result of his recent success.

I’m hearing a lot of talk he could be given the job now,” Brown told Football Insider.

“He’s come through these games with aplomb, he’s got this calm air about him and the players clearly like him and enjoy playing under him.

“But that’s not part of Man United’s plans, it’s not something they’re really considering, the idea has always been to wait until the end of the season.

“I think giving him the job immediately takes the edge away from it, it adds more pressure and then before you know it things with start going wrong.

“They gave him the job until the end of the season, and they’re going to stick with it.

“Then, at the end of the season, he may well get the full-time role if he keeps up the form he has started with, because it would be difficult to argue otherwise.

“He’s put himself in a really good position, but the club don’t want to risk spoiling what he’s done so far and they don’t want to change their plan.

“The decision will be made at the end of the season, whether it’s Carrick or somebody else who comes in, no matter what happens between now and then.”

Premier League duo join race to land Carrick

Carrick’s interim spell at United has been so impressive that, even if he doesn’t land the full-time job, he is likely to be a leading contender for another Premier League role.

Football Insider revealed on 6 February that Premier League clubs are eyeing Carrick and have been impressed by the work he has done so far at Old Trafford.

That includes the likes of Crystal Palace, who will be without a manager when Oliver Glasner moves on, and Fulham, with Marco Silva out of contract in the summer.

Bournemouth could also be in search of a new manager, having not yet made progress in contract talks with Andoni Iraola, whose contract also expires this summer.

All three will be watching Carrick’s progress closely and could be convinced to make a move if Man United push forward with appointing a fresh face.
