Man United next manager: The players have made their minds up on Michael Carrick being axed
Michael Carrick remains the firm favourite for the Manchester United job after Thomas Tuchel signed a new England contract.
That is according to ex-Everton, Aston Villa, and Aberdeen chief executive Keith Wyness, speaking exclusively to Football Insider, after Tuchel signed a contract extension with England until 2028.
The former Chelsea boss was a contender to become Man United‘s next permanent manager, with his contract with England previously expiring after this summer’s World Cup.
Carrick is unbeaten during his interim spell as Man United manager, and a top four finish could land him the job on a permanent basis.
‘Impossible’ for Michael Carrick not to get Man United job
Everton’s former chief Keith Wyness – who served as CEO at Goodison Park between 2004 and 2009 and now runs a football consultancy advising elite clubs – believes it would be the right decision for Carrick to get the Man United job.
Speaking on the new edition of Football Insider‘s Inside Track podcast, Wyness thinks even without a top four finish, Man United could still appoint Carrick as manager.
He told Football Insider‘s Inside Track podcast: “Look, it’s all about Michael Carrick getting Champions League qualification. I think that’s the answer.
“If he does that, it’ll be almost impossible for him to not get the job. And I think quite rightly, he should get it as well. He certainly had a great start. He stabilised things up.
“He understands the club inside out, which is what was needed. He is not imposing a tactical regime like Amorim. And I think Carrick has understood the players and seen the best talents and getting the best out of them.
“I think even if he didn’t get Champions League, I think it would be very hard to move him on now. Of course, there’s still a period of games to go yet, but all the signs are very promising. The fans have reacted really well.”

Man United line up Casemiro replacement
If Carrick does land the Man United job, then the 44-year-old will be looking to strengthen his squad in the summer transfer window.
Newcastle‘s Sandro Tonali has emerged as a top target for the Red Devils, with the Italian midfielder wanting Champions League football next season.
Tonali may not come cheap, but with Casemiro leaving at the end of his contract in the summer, the club are keen to add a new midfielder to their ranks.
