Man United manager: Wyness drops verdict on Erik ten Hag sack U-turn

Everton’s former chief Keith Wyness has suggested Erik ten Hag could stay at Man United – but only as a “stop-gap”.

Speaking on the new edition of Football Insider’s Inside Track podcast, the 66-year-old – who served as CEO at Goodison Park between 2004 and 2009 and now runs a football consultancy advising elite clubs – insisted the Dutchman will have no future at the club, even if executives U-turn on sacking him.

Football Insider revealed on Tuesday (28 May) that Ten Hag is still expected to be sacked as Man United manager this week.

He has benefitted from a groundswell of support from fans and pundits after leading United to FA Cup final glory against Man City last week (25 May).

However, his side recorded the club’s lowest-ever Premier League finish in the 2023-24 campaign after ending up eighth in the table.

Ten Hag is under contract at Old Trafford until June 2025.

Man United could keep Ten Hag – but he has no future, says Wyness

Wyness claimed Sir Jim Ratcliffe and INEOS may keep him in place while they fix other issues including the stadium, player recruitment and executive hires.

He told Football Insider‘s Insider Track podcast: “There is a chance Ten Hag could stay.

“The board may decide there are too many moving parts this summer, and the manager being another is just one too many.

“They may keep him in place while they fix other issues around the stadium, the sporting director, player recruitment, new executives, and more.

“There are a lot of things going on.

“It may make sense to keep Ten Hag, but he won’t be building for the future. It would be more of a stop-gap measure – and it would show that they are dithering, in my opinion.”
