Man United owners could be forced to bankroll ‘huge’ injection – Stefan Borson
Manchester United’s financial situation has drawn significant attention in recent weeks as Sir Jim Ratcliffe looks to cut costs at Old Trafford.
The Premier League club’s financial results for the second quarter of the 2024-25 financial year revealed a loss of £27.7million.
Man United have now accrued £1billion in net interest payments since the Glazer family’s takeover in 2005, with £337million of that figure due for repayment by June 2027 after a restructuring 10 years ago.
It comes at a time when United’s stadium regeneration task force – which includes Manchester mayor Andy Burnham and ex-defender Gary Neville – is considering plans to either expand Old Trafford or build a new facility altogether.
Former Man City financial adviser Stefan Borson exclusively told Football Insider it’s difficult to see how the club can finance the stadium plans without their existing shareholders putting up a “huge” amount of capital.
Ratcliffe has now increased his stake at Old Trafford to 28.9 per cent after injecting £238million into the club.
The Glazers, who bought a 98 per cent stake 20 years ago, have since seen their shareholding diluted to 48.9 per cent.

Man United face £3bn hit to complete Old Trafford regeneration project
Borson revealed United will need between £2-3billion to fund the stadium regeneration project.
He told Football Insider: “United could do a big equity fund raise and ask for the existing shareholders, the Glazers and INEOS, to put their hands in their pocket and raise some additional money through the issue of shares.
“We don’t know if that’s going to happen or if there is going to be some further development.
“But I think what it’s likely to do is bring in to sharp focus United’s ownership structure and the levels of debt.
“Remember, this is all even ignoring what they want to do in terms of the stadium.
“If you put that into the mix as well, they are also trying to fund a £2-3billion stadium at the same time.
“It’s very hard to see how it can be done financially without the shareholders putting up huge amounts of that capital.”

Aston Villa to accelerate plans to sign Marcus Rashford from Man United
Former United chief scout Mick Brown told Football Insider Aston Villa will accelerate their plans to sign Marcus Rashford after he joined the club on loan in January.
The 27-year-old fell out of favour under Ruben Amorim at Old Trafford before agreeing his move to Villa Park, with a £40million option-to-buy clause included in the deal.
The England international has registered two assists in four games for Unai Emery’s side, who sit eighth in the Premier League table, seven places above United.
