Kieran Maguire: Glazers could sell Man United for £3.8bn amid latest from New York

The Glazers are unlikely to consider selling Man United for any less than £3.8billion – twice the club’s current market value.

That is the view of finance guru Kieran Maguire, speaking exclusively to Football Insider about the latest developments on the New York Stock Exchange.

Sir Jim Ratcliffe, Britain’s richest man, has been linked with a United takeover in recent months after his failed bid to buy Chelsea.

But as quoted by BBC Sport on Wednesday (12 October), the 69-year-old has revealed that the Glazer family have told him that they do not want to sell.

The Red Devils’ share price declined following the news and now stands just below $13, with a market cap of $2.13billion (£1.9bn).

Maguire does not anticipate that the owners will cash in until the share price has at least doubled.

“When it comes to Jim Ratcliffe, he is very much all or nothing, in my view,” he told Football Insider’s Adam Williams.

If he wants to bring his expertise to Man United, it would be as a controlling partner. That would mean the Glazers would have to give up more than 51 per cent of the club.

Joel and Avram Glazer in particular do feel that United as a brand is very much undervalued.

I think it’s interesting that if we take a look at the markets since the Jim Ratcliffe interview was communicated, the share price has once again fallen below $13 dollars.

Remember, United were first listed on the Stock Exchange by the Glazers at $14. The share price performance has been poor.

If there was any encouragement from Ratcliffe’s comments, you would have expected the price to bounce up, but that has not been the case. I cannot see the Glazer selling for anything less than $25 to $30 per share.

It might not be the news United fans want to hear, but it looks as though Ratcliffe will look elsewhere as far as investment in football is concerned.

“They have put a lot of hope into him but it is unlikely to be the team from Old Trafford that he buys.
