Man United player ratings vs Everton: Alejandro Garnacho dazzles but 3/10 should be sold

Man United bounced back from their Manchester derby defeat last weekend to beat Everton 2-0 at Old Trafford on Saturday afternoon.

Erik ten Hag’s side scored twice from the penalty spot with Bruno Fernandes and Marcus Rashford adding to their goal tally.

The Red Devils remain in the race for Champions League football next season with the gap to fifth-placed Tottenham now reduced to three points.

Our United correspondent rates the players’ performances against Everton.

PLAYER RATINGS

Andre Onana [7]

Alert and brave – and had to be early on.

Everton came sprinting out of the blocks at Old Trafford and forced Onana into action including a scramble in the six-yard box which was expertly cleaned up by the Cameroon international.

A well-earned eighth clean sheet in the Premier League.

Diogo Dalot [6]

Dalot’s chemistry with Garnacho was on show here with the Portuguese right-back providing a constant threat with lung-bursting overlaps and intricate build-up play.

However, his eagerness to get forward occasionally left United short at the back and most of Everton’s joy came down his flank as a result.

Raphael Varane [7]

Man United

The standout performer in United’s back line.

United made a nervous start to the match but Varane’s experience shone through and his composure on the ball helped his teammates to settle down.

He made a crucial block on the brink of half-time to protect United’s two-goal lead.

Jonny Evans [5]

Started like he’d spent the week dozing rather than training. The 36-year-old struggled to cope with Everton’s high press but he grew in confidence once United had built a lead.

United fans appreciated his display with a standing ovation in the second half but they will also be counting the days until Lisandro Martinez returns.

Victor Lindelof [5]

After a dreadful display at left-back in the Manchester derby last week, Lindelof was more steady and self-assured here.

He handled the threat of Jack Harrison well but struggled to match the attacking threat usually provided by Luke Shaw.

Casemiro [3]

Man United

Stank the place out. Casemiro’s pass completion rate in the first half must have been in the single figures.

Despite being one of United’s more experienced players he was a complete liability in possession and was lucky that Everton didn’t punish one of his many mistakes.

The Brazilian midfielder has been linked with a move to Saudi Arabia and United should pounce at the chance to cash in on him this summer.

Kobbie Mainoo [6]

A performance that flew under the radar from United’s 18-year-old gem.

Mainoo has now appeared in 12 consecutive league games for United and looks extremely comfortable as a first-team regular.

He won’t make the highlights reel but he adds stability to a United midfield which has often been criticised for being too chaotic.

Scott McTominay [5]

Played in a more advanced midfield role where his physicality was key to winning long balls and aerial duels.

However, his passing in the final third was poor and he lacks the creativity and vision to play further forward on a regular basis.

Bruno Fernandes [8]

In a performance where United relied on moments of brilliance, almost all of them involved their Portuguese playmaker.

He maintained his brilliant record from the penalty spot and was unlucky to not score a second with a pin-point free-kick in the first half.

Alejandro Garnacho [9]

Garnacho will have fond memories of facing Everton after his superb bicycle kick at Goodison Park and he enjoyed himself against the Toffees again today with a truly dazzling performance.

United’s academy star won both penalties with tricky footwork and he was a constant threat from both flanks – his only criticism is that he was wasteful in front of goal and should have left Old Trafford with a goal of his own.

Marcus Rashford [6]

Man United

Had a quiet afternoon but managed to etch his name onto the scoresheet because Fernandes gifted him the second penalty.

Ten Hag has adapted the shape of his side and found a solution to keep Rashford in his favoured left-wing position until Rasmus Hojlund returns to full fitness.

Substitutes

Sofyan Amrabat [6] – Replaced Mainoo late into the second half and made a couple of important tackles. His loan spell has been underwhelming but he might have found his role as a substitute able to protect a lead.

Antony [N/A] – United’s £86million signing has lost his place in the starting lineup and he didn’t do enough in his short cameo here to regain his spot.

Willy Kambwala [N/A] – More experience under the belt of United’s academy product.
