‘Man United players stunned by what Ruben Amorim has just said’ – dressing room claim

Ruben Amorim is “destroying morale” in the Man United dressing room with his media comments, according to the club’s former chief scout.

Mick Brown, who spent over a decade at Old Trafford during the club’s most successful period and remains very well-connected there, exclusively told Football Insider that the Portuguese boss has come out with “ridiculous statements” which “would be better left unsaid”.

Amorim told the media last month that his side are “maybe the worst” in the 147-year history of Man United.

In a new twist following the 2-2 draw with Everton on Saturday (22 February), the Red Devils boss admitted he “does not know” the root of his side’s problems – remarking “if I knew what to change, I would change it”.

He succeeded Erik ten Hag at United in mid-November and has won just four of 15 Premier League games in charge so far.

Amorim ‘has had more than enough time’ at Man United

He signed a contract at Old Trafford running until June 2027 and was backed with one signing in the January transfer window with Patrick Dorgu arriving from Lecce.

Man United sit 15th in the Premier League table with just 12 matches of the 2024-25 campaign remaining.

Brown insisted Amorim has had “more than enough time to establish the issues” in the side he inherited.

“He comes out with some statements that would be better left unsaid,” he told Football Insider.

“It’s his way of going about things, but I think it shows his lack of experience in England and in the Premier League.

“Making those types of statements usually comes back to bite you.

“He might think it’s ‘the worst team in Man United history’ but he can’t say that. It’s destroying the morale in the dressing room.

“For the players to hear that – it’s not going to do them any good.

“He’s made some ridiculous statements, in my judgement, which really don’t do him any favours.

“Now, he comes out saying if he knew what the problems were, he’d fix them. It’s his job to know what the problems are.

“He’s managed about 20 games since he came in – that should be more than enough time to establish what issues you’ve got.

“There are serious questions being asked which, as of yet, he’s failed to answer.

“I’ve got nothing against Amorim, I’m sure he’s a good person and a good coach, but he’s now learning a lot about Manchester United.”

Man United could be forced to cancel summer spending plans

Former Everton CEO Keith Wyness has told Football Insider (21 February) that Man United have no “bargaining chips” to allow them to make significant summer signings.

It is widely recognised that Man United will have to sell to do big business of their own in the off-season.

The Red Devils have made a loss of £370million over the past five years – losing £113.2million alone in the year to 30 June 2024.
