Man United points deduction: Stefan Borson drops ‘big’ update today

Manchester United could need to go on a money-spinning post-season tour to ensure they don’t breach the profit and sustainability (PSR) rules.

That is the view of former Man City financial adviser Stefan Borson, who exclusively told Football Insider Man United may be looking to fill a hole in their accounts by generating some extra cash from an overseas game.

United were believed to be close to the PSR limit last season, with Premier League clubs only permitted to make £105million of losses over a rolling three-year period.

But the Manchester giants are expected to avoid a potential spending breach after they were allowed to add back certain expectational costs.

United have already spent more than £20million in exceptional costs this season following the sacking of Erik ten Hag and the appointment of Ruben Amorim.

The Athletic reported on 22 December the club are now planning to go on a post-season tour to Malaysia next summer that could earn them up to £8million in revenue.

Man United could need to generate cash after exceptional costs

Borson doesn’t believe it’s a big ask for the United players to play a game overseas after Tottenham and Newcastle United were criticised for their post-season tours earlier this year.

He told Football Insider: “You compare it with what City and Chelsea have put in place for their players after they have agreed to be in the Club World Cup.

“One game in Malaysia is nothing compared to a whole Club World Cup over half of June and half of July.

“I don’t think it’s that big of a deal. I know the players of Newcastle and Tottenham made a big fuss about it last season, but it doesn’t seem like a big deal to me.

“I think the interesting thing is they need the money.

“United probably need that £8-10million to meet PSR given the extra spending they have had this year on management changes.

“That would be my best guess as to why they want to do it.

“Clearly, it’s for the money. But I think there is an urgency to it, so I wonder whether it’s that optional.

“It may be that they have got a hole in the profit and loss account that they need to fill by generating a chunk of cash from a game, and this is the only way they can do it.”
