‘Man United ramp up sensational Scott McTominay return’, January plan revealed
Man United have considered a potential move to bring Scott McTominay back to Old Trafford after being impressed by his success at Napoli.
That is according to former Man United chief scout Mick Brown, who worked at Old Trafford for over a decade during their most successful period, as he exclusively told Football Insider that a sensational return for the 28-year-old had been on the club’s radar.
However, United are “highly unlikely” to make any move for McTominay, while there are also doubts about whether he would be willing to return.
This comes after Football Insider revealed on 1 November that McTominay is happy at Napoli and is not currently considering a move away from the Italian champions.
The Scotland international has been heavily linked with Tottenham and Everton in recent weeks, but remains crucial player for Antonio Conte’s side and is likely to remain there.
Man United unlikely to make Scott McTominay offer
Football Insider revealed on 21 November that Napoli will not sell McTominay in January and are deterring any interest in their star man despite the numerous interested clubs.
Brown, who has a wealth of experience in top-level player recruitment and also worked for the likes of Tottenham, Aston Villa and West Ham, insisted that Man United were among those interested but are not expected to proceed with a formal move.
“Bringing McTominay back is something United have looked at,” he told Football Insider.
“But I don’t think it’s ever something they’ve really planned to do, and I wouldn’t expect it to go any further than them just considering if it would be possible.
“When Scott left United, I was aghast at the fact they were even contemplating letting him go.
“I can’t applaud him enough, he’s gone away, knuckled down and become an absolute superstar for Napoli and for Scotland.
“Coming back to the Premier League, and back to United especially, I don’t think it’s something that would work for either party because there would be a lot of pressure.
“He’s the type of player United need, he’s got the ability to take games by the scruff of the neck, but I think it’s highly unlikely that he would come back.
“I don’t expect United will make any efforts to do that deal, and I would be surprised if it was something he was interested in as well, they’ve all moved on.“
Man United plan to block Kobbie Mainoo exit
While United continue to be linked with midfield reinforcements, there are still ongoing doubts about Kobbie Mainoo’s long-term future at Old Trafford.
The midfielder has made just nine appearances so far this season and just one start after falling out of favour under Ruben Amorim and has been interested in a move away.
However, Brown told Football Insider on 26 November that Man United have learned from McTominay’s departure and will not let the England international leave.

Football Insider revealed last month that Man United have no plans to let Mainoo leave despite the growing interest as a result of his lack of playing time.
Mainoo has been frustrated at Man United and asked to leave on loan during the summer before seeing his exit blocked, and the same is expected to happen in January.
