Man United risk points deduction after ‘£50m’ Ten Hag sacking – Keith Wyness

Everton’s former chief Keith Wyness has claimed Man United could pay “£50million” to replace Erik ten Hag once the dust settles.

Speaking on the new edition of Football Insider’s Inside Track podcast, the 66-year-old – who served as CEO at Goodison Park between 2004 and 2009 and now runs a football consultancy advising elite clubs – claimed that outlay will bring United closer to the Profit and Sustainability Rules (PSR) limit and therefore closer to a points deduction.

Ten Hag was sacked on Monday (28 October) after a dismal start to the Premier League season.

Football Insider revealed on Tuesday (29 October) that Man United chiefs are “confident” they will appoint Sporting CP boss Ruben Amorim as his successor with a clear timeline now in place behind the scenes at Old Trafford.

Sporting have confirmed an approach from United and have also revealed that the English giants are ready to pay Amorim’s release clause of around £8million.

Ten Hag sack and Amorim appointment could cost Man United ‘£50m’ in total, says Wyness

Wyness claimed the delay in hiring sporting director Dan Ashworth played a big factor in the Ten Hag faux pas after the Dutchman was handed a new United contract in the summer.

He told Football Insider‘s Insider Track podcast: “It’s going to be a big number.

“This will bring them closer to the PSR limit.

“They were never far away from it, by my understanding. United could be in danger.

“It’s a big change – it could be upwards of £50million just to change manager. There’s the clause for Amorim, the pay off for Ten Hag and the pay off for his staff.

“A lot of it comes back to not paying to release Dan Ashworth earlier, which would have helped them make the right decisions earlier.

“It could’ve meant that Ten Hag was sacked in the summer.”
