Kieran Maguire salutes Man United after Monday reveal that will ‘make a difference’

Man United deserve credit for their work in the community and charitable gestures around the festive period.

That is the view of finance guru Kieran Maguire, speaking exclusively to Football Insider about United’s recent donations to local food banks.

The Red Devils were due to play Brighton at Old Trafford last Thursday but the match was postponed amid a mass Covid-19 outbreak at Carrington.

The club announced on Monday (20 December) that they had donated over 4,000 food items due to be served at the game to Manchester charities.

Flowers set to adorn Old Trafford’s hospitality areas were gifted to St Ann’s Hospice, and the Man United Foundation raised £100,000 for FareShare.

United’s owners, the Glazer family, have faced stern criticism from bedrock supporters for their lack of engagement in the community.

But Maguire insisted the recent donations were proof that the club is still capable of doing something positive for the local residents.

“It’s certainly the right decision and fair play to United for doing that,” he told Football Insider‘s Adam Willaims.

“They had already bought the food, and the alternative would have been wrong. There are many, many good people working at United.

“There is that feeling of detachment between the United hierarchy and the surrounding areas.

“Things like this aren’t going to fix that but they also aren’t going to make it any worse, put it that way. This stuff will make a difference.”

United recently established a fan advisory board with the stated aim of giving supporters a voice at executive level.

The Red Devils are due to face Newcastle United on 27 December.
