Man United news: Kieran Maguire issues ‘£92m’ reveal as Cristiano Ronaldo payout explained

Man United shelled out £92million in performance-related bonus payments last season – but that figure is likely to fall this term.

So says finance guru Kieran Maguire, speaking exclusively to Football Insider about the windfall recently landed by Cristiano Ronaldo, 37.

The Daily Mail reported earlier this month (17 April) that the Portuguese superstar is set to receive a £750,000 bonus for reaching 20 goals this term.

It is also understood that he will bank an extra £100,000 for his hat-trick strike against Norwich City in the 3-2 win on 16 April.

Champions League qualification now looks a remote possibility for United this season, even with Ronaldo’s goals.

They lost 3-1 to Arsenal last Saturday (23 April) to fall six points behind in the race for the top four with just four games to go.

And Maguire explains that the Red Devils’ bonus payments figure could fall this season because of their lack of success on the pitch.

Their contingent liabilities last season were £92m,” he told Football Insider‘s Adam Williams.

“That is mainly to do with player contracts, with appearance bonuses and the like. You will also get payouts for qualifying for the Champions League.

So, player bonuses will be the main factor here. They accounted for £48m of the £92m figure.

“Interestingly, there was £31m under the ‘awards’ heading, which shouldn’t be too much of a problem for them with the way this season is going.”

Man United

Ronaldo has 22 goals and three assists in 35 appearances since his return to Old Trafford from Juventus last summer.

His side are next in action against Chelsea on Thursday (28 April).
