Man United shock as ‘Ruben Amorim tries to get sack’ – ‘Is he mad?’

Man United manager Ruben Amorim is “trying to get sacked” and should be given his wish, according to Richard Keys.

The 67-year-old presenter posted on his blog (20 January) criticising Amorim for his post-match comments calling his side as “maybe the worst team in the history of Manchester United.” [Sky Sports]

The Portuguese manager’s comments came after his side were humbled 3-1 at Old Trafford by a young Brighton side.

Goals from Yankuba Minteh, Kaoru Mitoma and Georginio Rutter condemned to a 10th loss in the league this season, and the Red Devils sit in a disappointing 13th place.

Former Sky Sports presenter, Keys, posted this: “So what the hell was Ruben Amorim thinking when he said just that yesterday? Is he mad? Why would you do that? Isn’t he the man charged with making things better?

“Trust me – I really didn’t want to talk about United today, but how can I not?

“‘We’re the worst side in United’s history’ screamed the Mail’s back page. No criticism of them. Every other outlet did the same – whether it was the socials, radio, tv or the rest of the newspaper world.

“I still can’t fathom what Amorim was trying to achieve. We know United are bad. That’s why you’re there Ruben. It’s your job to fix it – not tell us ‘I only have one way’ and follow up by telling the world your players are [expletive] – the very same players you need to help you out of this mess.

“I said a couple of weeks ago I thought he was trying to get the sack. I’m even more convinced now. If I was his boss I’d call him in this morning and give him his wish.”

Ruben Amorim sack only puts Man United back to square one

Football Insider Verdict

Keys has made a habit recently of giving reactionary takes to issues, rather than constructive feedback – as shown in his comments on Pep Guardiola’s personal life last week.

His opinion’s on his blog clearly show that, rather unsurprisingly, the headline is what matters most to the former Sky Sports presenter.

Amorim’s admission at how poor his side were was blunt and to the point, a very Portuguese way of speaking, and something that clearly did not land well.

The thing is, he was spot on, this Man United side is terrible. The exposed centre of the pitch under Erik Ten Hag has been fixed, instead the wide areas of the pitch look like free real estate for opposition teams.

However, if Jim Ratcliffe gives Amorim the time, and tools, to properly build a team that can play his style of football, Man United will get better.

Ruben Amorim shares similarities with Jose Mourinho at Man United

We have seen with Antonio Conte’s Chelsea side a few years ago just how dominant a three at the back set-up can be, and we have also seen what a confident young Portuguese coach can do for a team (think, “the Special One.”)

As frustrating as life has been for United fans, Ratcliffe and Amorim are working together to try and build a Man United side that can do better than two second-place finishes in 13 years, sacking the Portuguese manager now would only put them back to square one.

The new era under Amorim may begin with outgoings, as Alejandro Garnacho has been linked with a stunning move to Chelsea.

In other news, Amorim may have a new left-wing back joining his team in January.
