Injury expert explains Cavani ‘mystery’ after Man United setback

Edinson Cavani should return in the near future from his “mystery” injury at Man United.

So says injury expert Ben Dinnery, who runs the Premier Injuries site and has a background in medicine and data analysis.

Cavani has not played for United since the start of November and his season so far has been plagued by injuries.

The 34-year-old superstar has recently spent time in his native Uruguay as he continued his rehab for his latest tendon injury.

But ex-caretaker boss Michael Carrick told United’s media team on Wednesday (1 December) that “Edi’s back on the grass [in training]”.

Dinnery explains that the exact nature of the striker’s injury has not yet been disclosed.

“This is an injury that carried over from the summer,” he told Football Insider correspondent Adam Williams.

“He was hoping to manage it conservatively early doors but it caused him a little bit of discomfort.

“With that being said, if you ask most players they’ll tell you they’re all carrying little knocks and niggles.

“It’s all about that risk and reward. But it came to a point where Edinson felt it was impacting his game too much.

“This little break is an opportunity to prepare himself for this fixture block. I think he’ll want to be ready and available for some of this festive period.

“The difficulty is that it’s referenced as a ‘tendon problem’, but we don’t know what tendon it is.

“It could be the knee or it could be the Achilles, for example. That’s a bit of a mystery. That makes it difficult to ascertain the nature of the injury.

“We’re not sure if it’s an over-use problem. But we know he is meticulous in his recovery. He looks after himself really well.”

Man United

The Times reported on Thursday (4 December) that Cavani is keen to join Barcelona next summer.

When he does return to action for United it will be under a new manager in elite German coach Ralf Rangnick.
