‘Man United stars absolutely despise confirmed news’ – Stefan Borson

Manchester United have faced profit and sustainability (PSR) issues as Sir Jim Ratcliffe looks to improve the financial situation at Old Trafford.

Man United sent a letter to fan groups in January warning them the club are at risk of breaking the PSR rules, with top-flight sides only permitted to make £105million of losses over a rolling three-year period.

United posted a club-record revenue of £661.8million in 2023-24, but they recorded a net loss of £113.2million.

The Manchester giants have confirmed they will travel to Asia at the end of May for their first-ever post-season tour.

They will take on ASEAN All Stars in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, on 28 May – three days after the Premier League season ends – and Hong Kong at the Hong Kong Stadium on 30 May.

The tour is expected to generate around £8million in revenue for the club.

Former Man City financial adviser Stefan Borson exclusively told Football Insider the United players are going to “absolutely despise” having to go on a post-season tour.

Man United are close to PSR breach

Borson insisted United are likely still close to the PSR limit after confirming they will go on a post-season tour.

He told Football Insider: “If you look at what £8million is for United, it’s about the same as they paid to Ten Hag for his contract termination.

“I don’t think that’s a coincidence. I suspect United are very close on PSR.

“Therefore, this is a way in which they can get £8million of revenue.

“There will be some cost in taking everybody to where they’re taking them to for two games.

“There will be quite a lot of costs there, maybe £500,000, maybe even £1million.

“But this is a way in which they can bank a significant amount of money before 30 June.

“Therefore, it will help them with all of their PSR and Uefa calculations. It makes sense on that basis.

“But clearly, the players are going to absolutely despise it.”

Man United ahead of Everton in Liam Delap race

Football Insider revealed on 10 April Everton will struggle to compete with United and Chelsea for the signature of Ipswich Town star Liam Delap this summer.

The 22-year-old has attracted interest across the Premier League after impressing for Kieran McKenna’s side this season, having registered 12 goals and two assists in 33 appearances.

Sources say it would be a “huge coup” if Everton could land the forward, with United and Chelsea still a big pull for young English talent.
