Man United stars Fernandes and Maguire react to Scott McTominay’s fresh development

Scott McTominay has received messages from Man United duo Harry Maguire and Bruno Fernandes following his latest success with Napoli.

Having come through the academy ranks with the Red Devils, the midfielder had spent several years as a regular feature in the first-team at Old Trafford.

Despite that, Man United sold McTominay to Napoli in a £24.5million move back in the summer transfer window.

Since then, the 28-year-old has excelled for the Serie A side, becoming a key player at the heart of their midfield as Antonio Conte’s side battle Inter for the title.

That quickly led to many Man United fans being left stunned by the form of McTominay, and it appears he is continuing to impress some of his former teammates as well.

Scott McTominay excels again in Napoli win

On Monday (14 April), McTominay played a key role for Napoli as they won 3-0 at home to Empoli in Serie A.

The midfielder scored twice in that win, including a spectacular long-range strike to open the scoring after just 18 minutes.

That performance saw the former Man United man named as Player of the Match, which he was understandably pleased with, while catching the eye of some of those still at Old Trafford.

After McTominay took to Instagram after the game to react to that win and performance, Red Devils captain Fernandes commented on the post by writing: “What a player”.

Meanwhile, Man United centre-back Maguire was also among those to respond, as he posted two applause emojis.

Man United may regret summer sale

Football Insider Verdict

As well as his excellent form for Napoli, the midfielder has also continued to impress on the international stage for Scotland.

That has already led to Graeme Souness slamming Man United for selling McTominay, and there may well be some at Old Trafford regretting that decision.

There have been numerous games this season where the Red Devils have badly lacked a commanding presence in the centre of the park, something the 28-year-old would surely help provide.

Meanwhile, with centre-forward duo Rasmus Hojlund and Joshua Zirkzee both struggling for goals, McTominay’s ability to find the back of the net with decent regularity would have been as asset too.

All of that means Man United may well have made an error in letting him go, and it would be interesting to know what the likes of Fernandes and Maguire make of that given their reactions here.
