‘Man United still lead Tottenham for Mbeumo after £70m bid as wage details emerge’

Man United appear to still hold the key to Bryan Mbeumo’s signature despite Tottenham’s £70million bid for the Brentford star.

Following Thomas Frank‘s appointment in North London, Spurs attempted to hijack the deal with an eye-watering bid for the 25-year-old winger, blowing United’s offer out of the water.

Frank is attempting to bring Mbeumo to Tottenham with him, having boasted 20 goals and seven assists in 38 appearances for the Bees last season, becoming an integral part of the manager’s set-up.

While Spurs already have the likes of Brennan Johnson, Son Heung-min, Wilson Odobert, and Manor Solomon at their disposal, the new coach is likely to make changes to the squad ahead of next term.

However, the Lilywhites may have to hone in on a new target as Mbeumo’s move to Old Trafford seemingly remains the likeliest of outcomes before the 2025/26 campaign kicks off.

Man United still lead Bryan Mbeumo race due to wages

According to The Mirror (14 June), while United are unlikely to offer more than £60million to the Bees, the wages on offer at Old Trafford are helping Ruben Amorim‘s side to maintain the edge this summer.

It is understood that Mbeumo could earn between £150,000-£175,000 per week, plus bonuses, possibly taking the full package to £200,000-a-week, while Spurs are restricted to £140,000-a-week plus add-ons.

Brentford have refused to accept United’s bid of £55m plus £5m in add-ons, with Frank’s new side now attempting to hijack the deal, but wages are expected to play a huge part in the deal this summer.

Football Insider understands that wages also played a role in Newcastle United pulling out of the race for Mbeumo this summer, instead focusing on Antoine Semenyo and Anthony Elanga.

Amorim ready exciting summer transfer window at Old Trafford

Football Insider verdict

The Red Devils have wasted no time in kicking off their summer transfer window, having already signed Matheus Cunha from Wolves for £62.5m [BBC Sport].

After an outstanding campaign at Molineux Stadium, notching 17 goals and six assists in all competitions, the Brazilian has earned his move to Old Trafford, albeit there will be no European football.

Adding Mbeumo to the list of players would be quite the statement signing so early in the transfer window, but these big-money signings require some big-name exits at Old Trafford.

Sir Jim Ratcliffe‘s cost-cutting methods, seeing several hundred staff made redundant over the last few months, would suggest that money is very tight this summer.

A mass exodus is likely to ensue, especially if the Brentford star signed for United over Spurs, with several players already linked with exits, such as Alejandro Garnacho, following his falling out with Amorim.

Andre Onana, Mason Mount, and Rasmus Hojlund could all be put up for sale to account for the influx of signings this summer, but these changes are needed after such a torrid 2024/25 season.
