Man United tipped for big spending spree after £116m news – Kieran Maguire

Man United will be free to spend big in the transfer window after the cut-off date of June 30.

That is the view of finance expert Kieran Maguire, that “doom and gloom” reports of United having a small summer budget are “unwarranted”.

According to the Daily Mail, United will only have a budget of just over £35million for the summer window with the club dangerously close to the losses allowed under PSR.

Premier League regulations state that top-flight clubs can lose a maximum of £105million over a rolling three-year period before breaching the rules.

However, Maguire explained that the losses suffered by the club in 2021-22 will be excluded from their PSR calculations after June 30th.

United suffered a net loss of £115.5million in their 2021-22 club accounts.

Man United free to spend big in July after PSR update

I find the reports of a small transfer budget a bit strange because clubs are assessed on a three year basis,” Maguire told Football Insider’s Sean Fisher.

If we take a look at Manchester United, the financial year which has given them the biggest problem is 2021-22 which is set to drop out of the equation on June 30th.

They lost £116million in that year which did have an anchoring effect on the club’s ability to spend, but given that we’re now moving into 2024-25 then they will be freed up to spend more under PSR.

So I think some of the doom and gloom claims in respect of Manchester United are perhaps a little bit unwarranted.

We might see the club being cautious in the first few weeks of the window but there’s no reason why they can’t be competitive after that.

There is also a number of players set to leave which will shift payroll costs.
