Man United tipped to fund Pochettino transfer bonanza after manager hunt update – pundit

Man United will give Mauricio Pochettino the funds to “go out and sign the players he wants” if he is named their new manager this summer.

So says former Sunderland striker Kevin Phillips, speaking exclusively to Football Insider about the Red Devils’ hunt for a new permanent boss.

Ralf Rangnick was put in charge until the end of the season after Ole Gunnar Solskjaer was sacked in November last year.

But The Mirror reported last Wednesday (2 February) that United CEO Richar Arnold is confident of appointing Pochettino in the summer.

It is claimed that Paris Saint-Germain have decided to bin the former Spurs boss, 49, at the end of the season.

The moneymen at Old Trafford would allow the Argentine to reshape the squad if they get their man, insists Phillips.

“I don’t know where I sit with it,” he told Football Insider.

“The Premier League is a completely different ball game. United have been used to winning trophies, but not so much of late.

“The obvious accusation is that he never won any trophies at Tottenham, but he did mould them into a good side.

“I think he would have big funds to go out and sign the players he wanted. At Spurs, he didn’t have that because of the money spent on the stadium.

“He can clearly get the best out of players, we saw that at Spurs. When you do that at United and the players you can bring in, they will win trophies.

“When you consider his style of play as well, it makes sense to me.”

Pochettino’s PSG are 13 points clear atop Ligue 1 and face Real Madrid in the Champions League last 16 next Tuesday (15 February).

But they failed to win Ligue 1 for only the second time in nine seasons under his stewardship in 2020-21.
