Man United tipped to lose out on Erik ten Hag after Sky twist update – pundit

Ajax boss Erik ten Hag may turn down the opportunity to become the next permanent manager of Man United.

That is the view of 2000 European Golden Shoe winner Kevin Phillips, speaking exclusively to Football Insider about the possibility of the 52-year-old taking over at Old Trafford.

As per Sky Sports (24 March), United have interviewed Erik ten Hag with a view to him replacing interim manager Ralf Rangnick at the end of the season.

However, the club are said to face competition from two major European clubs for the services of the Ajax manager.

Phillips fears other major European clubs would be favoured over the Red Devils.

“I think he would probably turn Man United down,” he told Football Insider‘s Dylan Childs.

“Years ago you would never consider turning Manchester United down. But whoever goes in there now needs to strip it down to the bare bones.

“They have got good players there but that dressing needs to be sorting out. A few players need to be moved on and a few need to come in. It is a mini rebuilding project.

“It is a difficult one. I think the top manager may look at that and go to another top European club where there is less issues.

“It seems bizarre to talk about a manager turning down that club. You’d think any manager would jump at the chance but Ten Hag may come at it from a slightly different angle.”
