‘Man United to agree £40m Liam Delap deal’ after Ruben Amorim green light

Man United are exploring the possibility of signing Liam Delap ahead of the summer transfer window, according to their former chief scout.

Mick Brown, who spent over a decade at Old Trafford during their most successful period and remains very well-connected there, exclusively told Football Insider that Ruben Amorim has given the green light to sign a new striker.

Delap, 22, is believed to have a £40million release clause in his contract which has attracted a high level of interest from a number of Premier League clubs.

Brown told Football Insider that Ipswich will be forced to sell Delap if they are relegated this season amid interest from the likes of Chelsea, Newcastle and Man United.

The Red Devils are determined to sign a new striker this summer amid frustrations about Rasmus Hojlund since Amorim’s arrival at the club.

However, amid links with moves to sign Viktor Gyokeres and Victor Osimhen, Amorim must make a decision about the type of striker he wants to sign.

Man United eye £40million Liam Delap swoop

Brown told Football Insider in February that Delap is on Man United’s list of targets, with his age and playing style making him a concrete target.

Now, the former scout who has a wealth of experience in top-level player recruitment and also worked for the likes of Tottenham, Aston Villa and Blackburn, has insisted the Ipswich striker remains a key option for Amorim this summer.

Liam Delap is one I know Man United have been looking at,” he told Football Insider.

“They’ve got connections at Ipswich with Kieran McKenna which could smooth the deal over.

“And he’s got a £40million release clause in his contract, and that’s about the price you would expect to pay for a striker like him at the moment.

“So it’s certainly one to keep an eye on, I think there’s a distinct possibility they go for him and they’ll be exploring the chances of that one already.

“Ruben Amorim wants to sign a new striker, and he’s proven he can do it in the Premier League.

“The only reason I’m slightly hesitant is it hasn’t been made clear what sort of striker they want.

“We mention all these names, but they’re all different types of players.

“Delap is a totally different player to Gyokeres, who is a different player to Osimhen, then he’s a different type of player two whoever is next on the list.

“So it will be up to Amorim to decide what sort of striker he wants, but Delap is certainly one of the most interesting options there.”

Matheus Cunha update emerges at Old Trafford

As United continue to consider a number of players to bolster their attacking options, Wolves star Matheus Cunha is the latest player to be linked.

Brown told Football Insider on 7 April that United are among targeting Cunha this summer as there is “no way” he will remain at Wolves beyond the end of the season.

Arsenal are in the race to sign Cunha after he confessed: “I’ve made it clear that I need to take the next step. I want to fight for titles, for big things.” [The Guardian]

Meanwhile, Nottingham Forest want to sign Cunha in a record-breaking deal if they can achieve Champions League qualification this season.
