Man United ‘to agree Kobbie Mainoo deal’ soon

Manchester United star Kobbie Mainoo is likely to sign a new deal with the club despite the recent reports around his contract situation.

That is the view of former Man City financial adviser Stefan Borson, who exclusively told Football Insider it would send the wrong message if Man United were to sell the England international.

Sir Jim Ratcliffe has been looking to cut costs since taking over the footballing operations at Old Trafford in February last year.

Manchester Evening News reported on 7 January Mainoo, 19, is unhappy with the initial terms United have offered him for a new contract.

The midfielder was one of few players previously regarded by the club’s hierarchy as not for sale, with Alejandro Garnacho, 20, also in that bracket.

But The Times reported on 8 January Atletico Madrid are aware of the Argentina international’s availability after he’s been in and out of the side under Ruben Amorim.

Man United would consider selling any player after cost-cutting measures

Borson suggested United would consider selling any player if their valuation is met.

He told Football Insider: “If it’s true that Atletico will pay £50million for Garnacho, then I would think United would sell.

“I think the Mainoo thing is slightly less believable. I suspect they will come to a deal with him.

“It would send the wrong message to sell Mainoo to Chelsea, Man City or whoever else. I think that’s just unlikely.

“But ultimately, if somebody brings the price, I think United would look at it.

“They are in a new world right now, where I think they are just playing with all of their levers and one of them is no player is bigger than the club and if you bring us a price, you can go.”
