Man United to give Jadon Sancho a ‘free transfer’ now ‘the money is sunk’

Manchester United are likely to release Jadon Sancho on a free transfer next summer after he joined Aston Villa on loan.

Sancho signed for Villa on transfer deadline day (1 September) after Man United spent the summer window trying to offload the winger.

Villa will cover 80 per cent of Sancho’s wages, which are believed to be worth around £300,000 a week.

The 25-year-old, who is out of contract in June 2026, spent last season on loan at Chelsea.

Sancho has registered 12 goals and six assists in 83 appearances for Man United since making his £73million move to Old Trafford from Borussia Dortmund in 2021.

Man United to make Jadon Sancho contract decision

This article contains exclusive comment from Stefan Borson, a former financial adviser to Man City.

One of Man United’s primary focuses was offloading some of their out-of-favour stars throughout the summer window.

Rasmus Hojlund completed a loan move to Napoli on deadline day, while Antony joined Real Betis for £21.7million.

Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, Borson said: “I think Sancho has been a bit of a disaster really because you’ve ended up in a scenario where you think you’re going to sell him to Chelsea for £25million, you end up getting the termination fee of £5million, you pay his wages for all of the summer and then he goes with let’s say at best 100 per cent wage coverage, but it starts at 80 per cent.

“But you get no fee for the last year of his contract. Now, the idea that United are going to exercise the option just so they can then sell him on, I don’t buy that at all. I think basically they’ve got an option to do it, but I think it’s very unlikely.

“So, I think the situation is going to be that he is released at the end of his contract, and so they’ve basically given him a free transfer.

“Listen, it’s not a good deal for a player they paid £73million for. It’s not a good deal. But what do you do?

“These are all deals where the money is sunk, it’s gone. It doesn’t matter what you paid.

“You’ve got to look at it as it is today. What’s your situation? What’s your liability? How do we get ourselves out of the situation? Who’s going to pay his wages? Who’s going to pay us something that says we don’t have to pay them off?

“And they found somebody. Great.”

Christian Eriksen could be about to join Premier League club

Meanwhile, Football Insider revealed on 7 September Christian Eriksen is likely to join a new club soon after being released by Man United in July.

Eriksen has been training with Malmo in Sweden in a bid to keep up his fitness ahead of his next move as he remains keen to play at the highest level in Europe.

Several Premier League and Championship clubs are believed to have been keeping an eye on his situation and are expected to act outside of the transfer window.
