‘Man United to make Kobbie Mainoo decision as young midfielder nears exit’

Manchester United have decisions to make when it comes to the future of some of their young stars.

The Red Devils slumped to a 15th-place finish in the Premier League and lost the Europa League final last season, meaning there will be no European football at Old Trafford in 2025/26.

However, Ruben Amorim has been busy strengthening his squad in a bid to put that right, with Bryan Mbeumo and Matheus Cunha both signing to bolster the forward line.

Marcus Rashford has joined Barcelona on loan, while Christian Eriksen, Victor Lindelof and Jonny Evans have all left to lighten the load on United’s salary budget, but there’s more work to do.

Toby Collyer to leave Man United on loan

According to Samuel Luckhurst of the Manchester Evening News, Man United are preparing for the departure of Toby Collyer on loan.

The 21-year-old joined the Red Devils from Brighton in 2022 and made his senior breakthrough last season, clocking up 13 appearances and 467 minutes across all competitions.

However, Collyer — who is capped for England across various youth levels — has reached the stage in his career where he needs to become a regular starter in order to accelerate his development.

“I’ll sit down with the manager and higher-ups and see what’s the best solution; whether it’s stay here or go on loan,” Collyer said of the prospect of a loan (Chris Wheeler, 28 July). “I’ll just see how the next few weeks go and then we’ll go over those conversations.”

Luckhurst added that Collyer’s departure could ‘pave the way’ for United to make a midfield signing this summer.

Man United set for Mainoo decision amid Collyer update

Kobbie Mainoo is another youngster whom United must make a decision on this summer.

The midfielder broke into the first team during the 2023/24 season and played an important role in England’s run to the Euro 2024 final.

However, the 20-year-old struggled to make a similar impact last season, with muscle injuries forcing him to miss 17 games for United across all competitions (Transfermarkt).

Mainoo has just two years left on his current deal at Old Trafford, and with talks over a new contract stalling, Tottenham Hotspur have emerged as a potential suitor.

Should Collyer leave, it’s hard to see Amorim also sanctioning the departure of Mainoo, who is already an Old Trafford hero for his winning goal against Manchester City in the 2024 FA Cup final.

Mainoo has a big future ahead, and getting a new deal sorted for him may be just as important as any signing Man United can make this summer.
