‘Man United to make Ruben Amorim sack decision’ after £20m news

Ruben Amorim is coming under increased sack pressure at Man United with their feeble FA Cup exit against Fulham the latest in a string of poor results.

The Red Devils have now been eliminated from both domestic cup competitions and sit 14th in the Premier League with 11 games remaining this term.

Football Insider revealed on Tuesday (4 March) that Man United boss Amorim has told friends he thinks he made a mistake taking the job at Old Trafford.

Meanwhile, The Sun reported on 25 February that United would have to pay £20million if they were to sack Amorim and his staff due to a clause in his contract.

Everton’s former chief Keith Wyness – who served as CEO at Goodison Park between 2004 and 2009 and now runs a football consultancy advising elite clubs – has had his say on the Red Devils making another change in the dugout.

Man United ‘will think twice’ about sacking Amorim, says Wyness

Speaking on the new edition of Football Insider’s Inside Track podcast, Wyness insisted Man United will stick with Amorim despite his struggles so far.

Football Insider has been told Amorim has been “personally shocked by how bad the players are”, having “thought they were much better” as he prepared to take the hot seat at Old Trafford.

Wyness claimed United likely cannot afford the 40-year-old’s payoff – while Sir Jim Ratcliffe will feel he has to “own” the decision to bring him in.

Amorim’s record at Man United (as of 05/03/2025)

He told Football Insider‘s Insider Track podcast: “It’s hard to believe we’re talking about £20million being a headache for Man United.

“But I think that’s the truth, with their PSR situation – it will make a difference.

“They will be thinking twice about making another change, and it’s hard to understand how they’ve got to this situation.

“Not only will it be an issue of sacking another manager this season, but also how it will impact the PSR.

“I think they’ll stick with Amorim. Ratcliffe has probably reached the maximum amount of abuse he can get right now, and he’ll realise that he’s got to own this one and see it through.

“I think Amorim deserves a proper transfer window, too. He’s an investment, he’s a young manager.”

Amorim causes catastrophic dressing room crisis’ at Man United

Man United’s former chief scout Mick Brown has told Football Insider that his old side are suffering a “catastrophic” dressing room crisis after Amorim’s latest comments.

The United boss told TNT Sports: “I’m quite honest with my players… They already know that sometime they have to move on at the end of the season.”

Brown has previously claimed Amorim has broken the “golden rule” at Man United by publicly criticising his players.
