Finance guru: Man United to reach ‘whole new level’ after £200m news

Man United are set to reach a “whole new level” of matchday income if they add another 15,000 seats to Old Trafford.

So says finance expert Doctor Dan Plumley, speaking exclusively to Football Insider about plans to revamp the ageing 75,000-capacity stadium.

The Red Devils announced last Thursday (14 April) that they have assembled a specialist team to “significantly enhance the fan experience.”

The Daily Mail reported yesterday (17 April) that the redevelopment will cost more than £200million in total and see capacity reach 88,000.

Plumley revealed that United currently earn around £111m per year in matchday income but that figure will balloon with 15,000 extra seats.

“It’s a signficant increase but I’m sure they will be able to fill it,” the Sheffield Hallam University expert told Football Insider‘s Adam Williams.

“Pre-Covid, they generated £111m from matchday income, which was the highest in the league.

“They were in the Champions League that year, which means in terms of matchdays, they were turning over about £5m per match.

“So a cautious estimate might be that you can add another £1m per matchday. That’s not easy.

“Even though Old Trafford is dated, they are leading the way in matchday income and this could take them to a whole new level.”

The Old Trafford consultancy team is spearheaded by Legends International and Populous.

United claim the two leading agencies will begin work immediately.
