Man United to sack Ruben Amorim? – Stefan Borson reacts to £20m reveal

Manchester United manager Ruben Amorim has come under pressure in recent weeks following his unconvincing start to life at Old Trafford.

The Portuguese boss was drafted in to replace Erik ten Hag in November, but he has suffered eight defeats in his opening 16 Premier League games in charge.

Man United paid £14.5million in compensation to Ten Hag, his backroom staff and former sporting director Dan Ashworth following their departures in recent months.

The Sun reported on 25 February Old Trafford chiefs would have to pay £20million if they were to sack Amorim and his staff due to a clause in his contract.

Former Man City financial adviser Stefan Borson exclusively told Football Insider United wouldn’t easily be able to afford a £20million hit due to their profit and sustainability (PSR) situation.

The Manchester giants sent a letter to fan groups in January warning them the club are at risk of breaking the spending rules, with top-flight sides only permitted to make £105million of losses over a rolling three-year period.

United were hit by a PSR blow last month when it was confirmed the regulations will remain in place next season after it had been anticipated the squad cost ratio (SCR) system of financial control would be adopted for the 2025-26 campaign.

Man United don’t have PSR capacity to sack Ruben Amorim

Borson insisted he doesn’t believe United’s finances would be the deciding factor in whether or not they sack Amorim.

He told Football Insider: “I guess you can always find the money, but they’re not going to do it.

“I think it’s a bit of a red herring right now.

“Maybe you could say that it would factor into their considerations that they can’t easily afford a £20million hit in this current financial year because of PSR, maybe you’d say that.

“But I think it’s very unlikely that that would play the determinant part to it.

“Put it this way, they don’t seem to have £20million of capacity in the profit and loss for PSR purposes.

“But I just would not think that would be the key driver.”

Aston Villa to accelerate plans to sign Marcus Rashford from Man United

Former United chief scout Mick Brown told Football Insider Aston Villa will accelerate their plans to sign Marcus Rashford after he joined the club on loan in January.

The 27-year-old fell out of favour under Amorim at Old Trafford before agreeing his move to Villa Park, with a £40million option-to-buy clause included in the deal.

The England international has registered three assists in six games for Unai Emery’s side, who sit 10th in the Premier League table, four places above United.
