Man United told to forget Cody Gakpo and sign striker instead after Sky update – pundit

Kevin Campbell has told Man United to sign an out-and-out centre-forward instead of Cody Gakpo this month.

Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, the former Arsenal and Everton striker suggested the PSV Eindhoven winger is too similar to the Red Devils’ current forwards.

Erik ten Hag wants to add a forward to his squad before the transfer window closes.

According to Sky Sports (10 August), United are preparing a move for Gakpo.

PSV are said to value the versatile forward, who has four years remaining on his contract, at £35million.

It comes after the Premier League giants abandoned their pursuit of ex-West Ham and Stoke City striker Marko Arnautovic amid scrutiny from fans.

When asked by Football Insider if Gakpo would be a better option for Erik ten Hag’s side, Campbell said: “They have got [Cristiano] Ronaldo there already.

“Why would they sign a 33-year-old [Marko] Arnautovic? That sounded like a panic buy to me. I did not get that one.

“Gakpo is a really good player. Is he very different to what they have got though? They have [Jadon] Sancho, [Marcus] Rashford, [Anthony] Martial and [Anthony] Elanga.

“None of them are out-and-out centre-forwards. They need a proper striker for me. That should be their focus.”

Gakpo was one of the standout players in the Eredivisie last season.

He contributed 21 goals and 15 assists in 46 appearances across all competitions.
