Man United told to pull plug on signing ‘big-time Charlie’ from giants – pundit

Frank McAvennie has urged Man United against signing Olivier Giroud.

Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, the former West Ham striker insisted United need a player who is “hungry” rather than just a “big” name.

According to Italian outlet FootMercato (3 January), the Red Devils have tested the waters over a potential deal for the 36-year-old.

According to journalist Taylor Twellman (3 January), the striker turned down the latest contract offer from AC Milan ahead of his current deal expiring in the summer.

Erik ten Hag’s side are in the market for a forward following the departure of Cristiano Ronaldo during the World Cup break.

But McAvennie said Giroud is not the type of player United should be considering.

I do not know if that is what Man United need,” he told Football Insider.

He is a good player but he is a big player, do they need another big-time Charlie coming in?

They need somebody that is hungry, somebody that is the same age as the other boys. They do not want an aging team at Man United, they tried that and it did not work.

Ten Hag has got them all fighting for each other now. Giroud is well in his thirties now. It would be a great move for Giroud but I do not think he would want to come back. He has been there, seen it done it.

Giroud has made 20 appearances for AC Milan across all competitions this season.

He has scored nine goals and provided five assists in those outings.
