Man United told to reject De Zerbi and appoint 52-year-old instead – Wyness
Everton’s former chief Keith Wyness has urged Man United to appoint Mauricio Pochettino over former Brighton boss Roberto De Zerbi.
Speaking on the new edition of Football Insider’s Inside Track podcast, the 66-year-old – who served as CEO at Goodison Park between 2004 and 2009 and now runs a football consultancy advising elite clubs – claimed “experience, knowledge and man management” are the three key factors with United set to replace Erik ten Hag.
Football Insider revealed on Tuesday (28 May) that Ten Hag is still expected to be sacked as Man United manager this week.
The Dutchman won the FA Cup last week but led the Red Devils to an eighth-place finish – their worst in Premier League history.
De Zerbi left Brighton at the end of the 2023-24 campaign and has been widely linked with the hot seat at Old Trafford.
Man United should appoint experienced man manager, says Wyness
Pochettino left Chelsea by mutual consent earlier this month after leading the Blues to a sixth-place finish.
Wyness told Football Insider‘s Insider Track podcast: “With the Man United job, I think it’s important to have real experience.
“Someone like Pochettino is the right sort of fit for United, that’s my opinion. He’s more of a seasoned coach.
“I don’t think a young coach with a certain style of play would do well. There are some big pressures with the job and you’ve got to have the experience, knowledge and man management to do it.

“I wouldn’t be a fan of a young manager, like De Zerbi, coming into United. I’d want someone with a stronger head on their shoulders.
“Ten Hag almost fits that bill but his personality hasn’t shone through enough in terms of the man-manager you need to be.”
