Man United told to seal deal for 25-year-old ‘way better’ than Fred after chief’s reveal – expert

Kevin Campbell has heaped praise on Barcelona midfielder Frenkie de Jong amid interest from Man United.

Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, the former Arsenal and Everton striker claimed the 25-year-old would be a major upgrade on Scott McTominay and Fred.

Man United’s incoming manager Erik ten Hag is widely reported to be interested in signing De Jong this summer.

According to Fabrizio Romano (17 May), the Netherlands international is prioritising Champions League football and would be happy to stay at the Nou Camp.

However, the Red Devils are said to have not given up on a deal, with Ten Hag very keen on his former Ajax player.

Speaking to Spanish publication Sport (17 May), Barca president Joan Laporta did not rule out a potential exit for De Jong and said “we will do what is best for the club.”

Campbell, who delivered weekly punditry for La Liga TV last season, urged United to continue in their pursuit of the midfielder.

“Frenkie de Jong is a player I covered a lot when I was working in Spain,” he told Football Insider‘s Dylan Childs.

“He is just brilliant. He is way better than McTominay and Fred. He is way above them.

“The key is getting him. They have got to get him.

“If they get him in there, all of a sudden that midfield looks very different. He can do it all.

“I have seen him play in three or four different positions in one game including as a centre-half. He did it all effortlessly. He is a really, really good footballer.”
