Man United told to sign Frenkie de Jong alternative amid £42m bid update – pundit
Noel Whelan has insisted Man United are right to move on from Frenkie de Jong and explore a move for Sergej Milinkovic-Savic this summer.
The former Leeds striker, speaking exclusively to Football Insider, suggested the Red Devils could return to the negotiating table for the Dutchman next summer.
According to the Daily Mail (28 July), Man United are preparing to test Lazio’s resolve with a bid of £42million for midfielder Milinkovic-Savic, 27, as they prepare to move on from De Jong.

However, the report claims the Italian club are likely to hold out for a fee closer to the £60million mark.
The big-money move for De Jong, which has been in the works for the entire off-season, has hit the rocks due to his reluctance to swap Barcelona for Old Trafford.
Whelan insisted Man United need to add players of the Serbian’s “experience and quality” this summer after losing stars like Paul Pogba.
“They’re saving themselves some money if they go for Milinkovic-Savic,” he told Football Insider‘s Ewan Kingsbury.
“There’s no point holding on for a player who doesn’t want to leave and come to your club. There are all sorts of financial issues – but you can’t hold on forever.
“You can’t just put your eggs in one basket – you need a plan B. There may be an opportunity to go back in for De Jong next summer because I think they’ll need two midfielders.

“They need this experience and quality.
“Milinkovic-Savic is definitely not a bad option to turn to, and it’s not breaking the bank in the grand scheme of things.”
