Man United told to sign key Frenkie de Jong ally amid ‘surprise’ claim – pundit

Kevin Campbell has claimed Man United should sign Ruben Neves to compliment Frenkie de Jong.

Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, the ex-Arsenal and Everton striker claimed he was “surprised” Man United had not made a move for the Wolves midfielder.

A United source told Football Insider on Monday (29 June) that the club were close to agreeing a “huge” £64.4million deal with Barcelona for De Jong.

Man United

Erik ten Hag worked with the 25-year-old at Ajax before his £77million move to Barca in the summer of 2019.

He now wants the Netherlands interntaional to be the first signing of his Man United reign and will build the midfield around him.

The Manchester giants have released Paul Pogba, Juan Mata and Nemanja Matic this summer and Campbell has claimed De Jong should not be the only midfielder they sign.

He told Football Insider assistant editor Dylan Childs: “Because they are losing Mata, Matic, a couple of experienced guys, you probably need a couple to come in.

“I’m not sure who it will be. I’m surprised that United haven’t been linked with Neves.

“Neves at Wolves is a real top player and knows the Premier League.

“Ten Hag will have his own mind on who he brings in.”

Wolves

Fabrizio Romano told the United Stand on Tuesday (28 June) that the club had been put off by Wolves’ €100million (£84.4million) asking price for Neves.

The Portugal international has two years left on his Wolves contract and is a key player in Bruno Lage’s side that finished 10th in 2021-22.

In other news, a finance guru has issued a “brutal” Man United transfer claim and it’s “going to upset some fans”.
