Man United transfer news: ‘Huge’ update on summer signings plan – Sources

Man United will be unable to make huge signings this summer due to their Financial Fair Play obligations, sources have told Football Insider.

It is believed that the Red Devils’ recent heavy spending has restricted their flexibility in the upcoming summer window.

Well-placed sources have told Football Insider that the club are on the “fringes” of breaking FFP rules and will have to sell players to raise funds for transfers.

United spent vast sums of money last summer on transfers including Rasmus Hojlund, who cost a reported £72million from Atalanta, and Mason Mount, who cost a reported £55million from Chelsea.

Man United are hamstrung by their FFP obligations which could impede their chances of making big signings

Massive fees before this season, including Antony’s incredible £82million switch from Ajax in 2022, have hampered the club’s ability to spend big.

The club are expected to sanction many player departures in the off-season amid Sir Jim Ratcliffe’s long-term plans to transform the club behind the scenes and on the field.

They are also eager to get high-salary stars off their books, with Football Insider revealing (23 February) that Raphael Varane will depart when his contract expires at the end of the season.

This would free up a reported £340,000-a-week on the club’s wage bill.

United are hoping to be able to utilise expected new sporting director Dan Ashworth’s transfer expertise, but he has been put on gardening leave by Newcastle United following his decision to leave.

Sources have told Football Insider (21 February) that the clubs are likely to agree a compromise on the Magpies’ compensation demands to let Ashworth work at Man United sooner.
