Man United turn attention to defender signing after ‘huge’ development – Sources

Man United are planning to sign a defender in the summer, sources have told Football Insider.

It is believed that the new regime at Old Trafford are keen on signing defensive reinforcements in the off-season.

The club are expected to put many non-essential first-team players on the market to boost their transfer kitty, while some will be allowed to exit following the expiration of their contracts.

As revealed by Football Insider (23 February) Raphael Varane will depart the club when his contract expires at the end of the season, with the club set to make a “huge” saving on his wages.

Man United’s new regime are keen to bolster defence

Erik ten Hag’s side are eager to fill the void left by the Frenchman and will be active in the market to bolster their backline.

They will also be hamstrung by their Financial Fair Play obligations, with Football Insider revealing (24 February) that they are not expected to make any huge signings.

The club are also hopeful that they can utilise the expertise of expected new sporting Dan Ashworth, who would be a major influence on selecting defensive targets.

Sources have told Football Insider (21 February) that Newcastle United and Man United are likely to agree a compromise on the Magpies’ compensation demands to let Ashworth work at Man United sooner.

Man United sit sixth in the Premier League table after their 2-1 defeat to Fulham at Craven Cottage on Saturday afternoon (24 February).

They are next in action against Nottingham Forest in the fifth round of the FA Cup on Wednesday evening (28 February).
