Man United turning into 'soap opera' amid new twist in Cristiano Ronaldo 'saga' - pundit

The speculation regarding Cristiano Ronaldo’s Man United future is “dragging the club down”.

That’s according to former Rangers and Scotland boss Alex McLeish, speaking exclusively to Football Insider amid the latest on Ronaldo.

The 37-year-old played the opening 45 minutes at Old Trafford in his first appearance of pre-season in a clash against Rayo Vallecano on Saturday (31 July).

Sky Sports initially reported that the club had no issues with Ronaldo’s premature exit.

But Erik ten Hag told Dutch outlet Viaplay on Wednesday (3 August) that the striker’s behaviour was “unacceptable”.

McLeish claims this matter needs to be settled behind closed doors.

“It’s a whole saga, isn’t it?” McLeish told Football Insider’s Ben Wild.

“It’s a bit soap opera-ish. You don’t want those kinds of issues bothering a football club of the magnitude of Manchester United.

“We know Ronaldo is a phenomenon, he always has been and he still is. The legs seem to be still there, you would think this is something you wouldn’t want to see in public.

“You don’t see it at other clubs, it is dealt with more privately than that. It’s will he or won’t he every day at the club.

“It’s dragging the whole club down and no one wants to see that.”

Ronaldo scored 18 goals in 30 Premier League appearances during 2021-22.

He also scored six goals in seven Champions League outings during the same campaign.

In other news, four offers have been tabled, including two from the Premier League, for a Man United 28-year-old.
