Man United were offered player Gary Neville loves on deadline day, but signed Senne Lammens instead

Manchester United’s summer transfer business has come under discussion as the club continues their rocky start to the season.

Ruben Amorim is under increasing scrutiny at Old Trafford, but Man United’s 2-1 win over Chelsea has bought the Portuguese head coach some time.

Having played three of last season’s top four already, Man United sit 11th with seven points from five games, and will face off against a struggling Brentford side on Saturday.

Man United’s summer signing Bryan Mbeumo will be reunited with his former teammates in the match, as Amorim’s side will be looking to pick up back-to-back Premier League wins.

Man United were offered Conor Gallagher on deadline day

Mbeumo was joined by Matheus Cunha, Benjamin Sesko, and Senne Lammens in the transfer window, but many have questioned United’s lack of movement in the midfield market, as they once again look light in the middle of the park.

The Sun’s Samuel Luckhurst has now released a report suggesting that United were offered the chance to sign Atletico Madrid midfielder Conor Gallagher on loan, but instead opted to move for Lammens.

Gallagher would have brought energy to Amorim’s midfield, something which the current midfield currently lacks.

Amorim has opted for Bruno Fernandes and Casemiro mainly, but across all five of United’s matches in the Premier League this season, the midfield can be pinpointed as a major weakness.

Gary Neville sang Conor Gallagher’s praises

Neville has been a loud critic of Man United over the last 12 years since Sir Alex Ferguson’s departure, yet the same cannot be said about his views on Gallagher.

Gallagher was praised by the former United right-back in an analysis on Sky Sports: “I liked his energy. I liked his commitment to go press the ball… I thought when he got the ball he used it. I thought he was brilliant for Crystal Palace.”

Neville was speaking on Sky Sports’ coverage of Arsenal vs Crystal Palace (18 October, 2021), and continued to say: “You need players in your team who are out of possession going to go win the ball back, do the hard yards, are going to be brave, and get on the ball in the Premier League.”

Despite Neville’s praises and United’s lack of energy in midfield, it appears Amorim felt his side’s energy was better spent in the pursuit of Lammens as a backup goalkeeper, as opposed to the qualities Gallagher would bring to the midfield at Old Trafford.
